R News & Views ARCHIVE, 5/16/08...So much to talk about…
by WJER President Gary Petricola

When I decided to start doing "R News and Views," we discussed the time and commitment it takes to write a regular segment on news, events or issues that happen within a week. The other problem, however, is that there is so much going on here in the county, it becomes difficult to determine what to comment on.

Example: this week we could talk about last weekend’s groundbreaking for the new home of the Salvation Army on Union Avenue. Or about the 15th Annual Safe Kids/Healthy Kids Day that was held last Sunday at Kent State Tuscarawas, and how great it is that so many groups come together to present programs that will help to keep our kids safer and healthier. We could talk about the 16 people who became the 6th class to graduate from the Leadership Tuscarawas program. And how this class came together to create a Literacy Coalition, forming a community-wide partnership of literacy service providers and community stakeholders working together to make services efficient and effective. We could also talk about the high school graduations that will take place this weekend and how we wish the new grads the best in all their future endeavors. We could also talk about the Canal Dover Festival and all the great entertainment and friendly social interaction that this yearly event creates. And how this Sunday will mark the start of another great summer of entertainment at the Tuscora Park Amphitheatre with Scott Miller and the New Phila Jazz Band kicking things off, and the Dominic Greco Band performing on Monday night. And speaking of Monday, let's not forget what this holiday weekend is all about. A time to remember and a time to honor, as we celebrate Memorial Day. Or Decoration Day as many people still call it, for the tradition of decorating the graves of service people with flowers. I encourage you to attend a Memorial Day service if your community is having one, or to just reflect for a moment on all those who have served and are serving our country.

I could also tell you about the rather inconsiderate person I heard about at an area gas station. Cars were lined up at the pumps, and this person decided after getting gas, he would stay parked alongside the pump and clean out the inside of his car…emptying out all the trash that he accumulated, instead of moving his car away from the pump so those waiting in line could get gas, not watch him clean his car.

But perhaps I should save my views on rude and inconsiderate people for a slower news week.

Have a great weekend appreciate and be appreciative of all the great things our county has to offer. Those are my views, if you want to see these comments and more, check out the WJER website at wjer.com and click on "R News and Views.
