Next I want to congratulate the Dover Exchange Club on another great Canal Dover Festival. It takes a lot of time and effort to put the festival on, and for so many of us it provides an opportunity to see a great parade, hear a lot of good music and other festival activities. This year the Dover Exchange Club celebrates their 50th year. Through the festival and other fundraising projects they have given back thousands and thousands of dollars to our community. Including over $60,000 in scholarships, contributions to the Rainbow Connection, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Soap Box Derby, the DOCK program at Dover Middle School and recently they purchased Smart Boards for Dover South School and Dover Middle School, along with many other worthwhile projects. The Dover Exchange Club is true to its mission to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, Community Service and Youth Activities. We appreciate their efforts and the many contributions they make to our community.
This weekend we say goodbye to May and welcome in the month of June. June has many special dates and events that we need to acknowledge. Such as June 6th, the 64th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. It's a time to honor America on June 14th as it is Flag Day, and it is time to honor dads, as we recognize Father's Day on the third Sunday of June. And it officially marks the beginning of summer on June 21st. And speaking of summer, I was glad to hear the US EPA is finally stepping up efforts to improve conditions at Countywide Landfill near Bolivar. Hopefully they will get a project underway to expand a cap over the landfill to reduce the odors that greet motorists in that area and that the neighbors have to live with daily. Any relief they can give those people this summer and in the future is critical.
