DOVER TWP. (WJER) (Jan.4, 2024) – The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s office is investigating an incident where a father allegedly shot his adult son in the upper leg in self-defense at his home.

Matthew Robert McKenzie

The two men live next to each other in the 6800 block of Dover Zoar Road NE.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell says the altercation reportedly began when 40-year-old Matthew McKenzie went to his 70-year-old father’s home and started an argument that became physical around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Campbell says the father shot his son in the left upper thigh after getting knocked to the ground and attacked.

The father was treated at the scene for minor injuries. He is not expected to be charged.

Matthew McKenzie was taken to a Canton hospital for his leg injuries and later the Tuscarawas County Jail on assault and domestic violence charges. He is scheduled for arraignment in New Philadelphia Municipal Court today.
