Tuesday’s storms bring lots of rain, but not much damage

| April 3, 2024

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (April 3, 2024) – First responders are thankful Tuesday’s storms didn’t end up causing much damage in the area, even with the Tornado Warning issued for Tuscarawas County in the evening. The heavy rain though did result in flooding in different parts of the county.

New Philadelphia Service Director Ron Mcabier says the water at the Tuscora Park pond was up to – and even over— parts of the boardwalk at times.

“It was pry the highest I’ve seen it for a while,” he said.

It was also high across Wabash Ave. at the lagoon that feeds into the park pond.

Mcabier says fortunately there are gates to control how much water is exiting the lagoon.

“Trying to just get that happy medium so each of them each kind of stay within their banks is what we’re trying to do, just a juggling act,” McAbier said.

McAbier says the service department was also planning to pump away some of the rising water at the corner of Larkin Drive near South Elementary.

Meanwhile, sheriff’s officials and others also had to assist a couple of people who decided to go out onto the Tuscarawas River near the boat ramp off State Route 416 Southeast. There were no injuries.
