Summer reading activities underway through Tuscarawas County Public Library
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 3, 2024) – The Tuscarawas County Public Library is launching eight weeks of free activities as part of its Summer Reading Program.
Children’s Services Manager Mary Smrek says all five libraries will host a variety of programs that include Storytimes, live animal encounters, gaming competitions for teens, much more.
Children can also track what they read for the chance to win prizes, all as incentives to avoid the so-called summer slide where kids lose some of that knowledge away from school.
Smrek says participating kids are asked to log the number of hours they read rather than the number of books they read.
She says each kid in the program gets a tracker. Every hour they read earns them a ticket eligible for prizes and badges. They also get a free book after 20 hours.
Adult Services Manager Robyn Guedel says they’re doing something similar for grown-up readers.
Adults after completing 20 hours in the Summer Reading Program are eligible to win grand prizes such as two tickets to a show at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center or a birdwatching kit.
Some of the summer reading programming for adults includes cooking and genealogy classes, technology classes, and art and travel programs.
The library held its summer reading kickoff event last week at the main location with live music, crafts, food, and activities. But those additional programs of various themes will continue throughout the summer.
