Fleeing suspects don’t get very far in pair of Dover incidents
DOVER (September 17, 2024) – A pair of suspects fleeing from police got caught after running into the wrong yards in separate incidents this past Friday and Sunday.
On Friday, Dover Police received a report of a man fleeing the scene of a crash on Brookside Drive around 8:30 p.m. City Safety Director Bob Everett says the vehicle the man was driving was reported stolen from Morgan County.
Multiple officers and a police dog started searching for the suspect. Everett says he ran into a yard in the 1800 block of Wooster Avenue where a neighbor tackled him. The suspect then surrendered to police.
“We would like to thank the citizens who didn’t hesitate to jump in and help the police,” Everett said. “Obviously, we never want to see anybody get hurt doing that, but this time no one was hurt, and we’re very thankful we have the citizens we do and they’re willing to help the police.”
Police did not release the suspect’s name, but Everett says he might be responsible for a series of car break-ins in the past few weeks.
On Sunday afternoon, police responded to a report involving a 35-year-old New Philadelphia man who was wanted on multiple warrants, including felony burglary.
Police started looking for the man, who hid behind a shed and in the woods in the Jessica Drive area before ending up in the yard of a police captain, who was leaving her house to head for work.
“The officer was walking out,” Everett said. “She spotted him, and he spotted her, and of course they knew each other. I think he was about to take off and she pretty much told him that would not be a good idea. She was able to get the cars there and get help, and he was apprehended and arrested.”
The police report indicates the man paused to smoke a cigarette before police arrested him. He is in the Tuscarawas County Jail now, with bail set at $50,000.
