Wainwright man shot by deputies in July headed to prison
NEW PHILADELPHIA – A 41-year-old Wainwright man shot by sheriff’s deputies on the Fourth of July will spend more than two years in prison for resisting arrest while brandishing a gun.
Joseph A. Barnhart pleaded no contest to four charges stemming from the July 4th incident. A plea arrangement had two of the four charges dismissed.
Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court Judge Mike Ernest found Barnhart guilty of resisting arrest with a firearm specification and using weapons while intoxicated. He will first serve one year in prison for the firearm specification, then 16 months on the resisting arrest charge, according to court records.
Sheriff Orvis Campbell has said Barnhart was intoxicated and shooting at his house on Wainwright Road where family members were inside. Campbell said Barnhart repeatedly pointed the gun at responding deputies, who shot him in the arm and leg.
