Quaker Foundation to celebrate student success tonight

| May 2, 2025

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (May, 2, 2025)  – The New Philadelphia school community is honoring standouts past and present this evening.

Quaker Foundation board member Jan McInturf says they are awarding 140 scholarships to 89 students totaling nearly $310,000 at tonight’s annual recognition ceremony at the Kent State Tuscarawas Performing Arts Center.

McInturf says the selection committee looks not only at student grades, but also at extracurricular activities and how the applicants stand out as leaders.

He says as of tonight the foundation will have presented $2.9 million in scholarships since its first ceremony in 1994, when just two $2,000 scholarships were given out.

Three alumni members are being recognized tonight: Leonard Gundy, Paul Matter, and Laura Murphy Shapiro. And $6,000 teacher grants are going to April Range and Kelly VanArsdalen.

Tickets are available by donation tonight at the door. Tea, coffee, and desserts will be offered starting at 6:30 p.m. The program begins at 7:30 p.m.
