/ October 9, 2025

The event

The Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table will meet on Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, located at 525 N. Walnut Street in Dover. The featured presenter will be Van Young, who will present: “The Life of William Tecumseh Sherman.”

General William Tecumseh Sherman was one of the most recognized and celebrated generals of the Civil War.His famous taking of Atlanta and March to the Sea was the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. Yet, his life was very controversial.  Loved by northerners, he and his actions were despised by the south. Hero or despot? This presentation covers the entire life of the man who coined the phrase “War is hell”. A complicated individual, Sherman’s life was filled with both success and failures.

Considering himself a self-taught historian, Van Young was born and raised in northeast Ohio. He has been a resident of Columbus for the last 44 years. One of his retirement goals was to spend time studying and learning about the Civil War, and specifically the social and personal stories of that era. That also led him to immerse himself into learning more about our great American History. Since his retirement from AT&T in 2012, Van has become active with two Central Ohio civil war organizations and is the current President of the Griswold Center American History Study Group.

The mission of the Tuscarawas Valley Civil War Round Table is to educate the community about the American Civil War, to preserve Civil War heritage and to remember those who struggled for their cause. For more information, please call the Dover Public Library at 330-343-6123.
