Police release bodycam footage of struggle with suspect who allegedly fired officer’s gun

| January 15, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Jan. 15. 2026)  — Newly released body‑worn camera footage captures the harrowing moment a wanted suspect wrestled a gun away from a New Philadelphia police officer and fired a shot, narrowly missing him, according to police officials.

The department published the VIDEO “in the spirit of transparency,” noting that it contains graphic content and strong language. No one was seriously injured during the incident.

Police say the confrontation unfolded around 8 a.m. behind an apartment complex on East High Avenue, where officers responded to reports of a suspicious man lying under a tree. When officers approached, they learned the man was wanted on multiple charges — including two armed robberies in Stark County and a parole violation.

As officers attempted to detain him, authorities say the suspect became combative. The bodycam footage shows the struggle escalating rapidly. A single muffled shot is heard during the tussle.

Captain Rocky Dusenberry confirmed that the suspect, identified as 28‑year‑old Dyllan Riter, was eventually subdued and taken into custody. He was transported to the Tuscarawas County Jail, where he awaits local charges.
