Woman charged with discharging firearm in downtown New Philadelphia

NEW PHILADELPHIA – A woman who shot a truck in downtown New Philadelphia soon after visiting the police station faces a misdemeanor charge.

According to a court records, the 34-year-old New Philadelphia woman pleaded not guilty last week to discharging a firearm on or over a public road. She was released on her own recognizance and ordered not to use or possess any firearms.

A police report says the shooting occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 3, just after 1:30 a.m. outside a tattoo business across the street and a couple of doors down from the New Philadelphia Police Station on 2^nd Street SW.

A caller reported a woman shot his friend’s truck that was parked in the roadway and then put something in the trunk of another vehicle.

Responding officers found a shattered window and a hole in the back driver’s side door consistent with a 9mm round. The report says they also found a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol in the trunk of the woman’s vehicle.

The police report says the woman was just at the police station reporting suspicious activity at her neighbor’s place.

She reportedly told police she shot the vehicle because she thought someone was trapped inside and she needed to save them.

Police took the woman to the Tuscarawas County Jail. She was arraigned at 10 a.m. that morning and released. Her next hearing is March 11.
