13-year-old flown to hospital after dirt bike crash in Wayne Township

| April 3, 2026

WAYNE TOWNSHIP (WJER) (April 3, 2026)  — A 13-year-old boy fortunately avoided serious injury following a dirt bike crash Thursday afternoon in Wayne Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Paramedics were dispatched shortly after 1 p.m. to the area of Lower Trail Road near Trail Bottom Road. New Philadelphia post Sgt. Bill Bower said the Dundee area boy was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital for possible neck injuries, but he was treated and later released.

Bower said the boy was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to troopers, it is unclear what caused the dirt bike to leave the roadway, strike a ditch, and overturn. The incident remains under investigation.

Bower noted the boy could face legal consequences for operating a dirt bike on a public roadway without a license and for failure to control. Troopers will consult with the juvenile prosecutor regarding potential charges.

Under Ohio law, 14- and 15-year-olds are eligible to obtain a motorized bicycle or moped license to operate certain small bikes on public streets.
