Work on Gazebo, Brewhouse roof underway in downtown NP
NEW PHILADELPHIA – Crews are adding a gazebo to the downtown square this week.
Service Director Ron McAbier has been anticipating its arrival as part of the $3 million beautification project in the center of city. His wait is over as crews began erecting the gazebo Wednesday.
McAbier says motorists might want to avoid the Broadway and High intersection as crews use a crane install the new Gazebo. The work is expected between 10 and 2. At 10 a.m., traffic was only minimally impacted.
The Gazebo is part of a complete overhaul of the northwest quadrant of the square dubbed the event plaza. It includes the Gazebo stage, outdoor seating and lighting, plantings and pavers lining the ground. The square’s facelift is being funded by Ohio’s Appalachian Community Grant program. Officials hope the entire project is done by mid-August.
Meanwhile, Mayor Joel Day says the crews replacing the roof over the Broadway Brew House also will need to bring in cranes during the project. That could also result blockage along South Broadway. At 10 a.m. Wednesday, the crane was only blocking parking spaces.
Meanwhile, ODOT officials are continuing to gather community input on their plan to improve traffic at the I-77/U.S. 250/state Route 39 intersection. The proposal includes a pair of roundabouts, including one at Blue Bell Drive. ODOT will host an open house on the project on Tuesday, June 30th, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Buckeye Career Center.
