Barns destroyed, horses safe in Sugarcreek fire
SUGARCREEK – No people or animals were hurt in an overnight fire that destroyed two barns and everything inside them.
Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue Chief John Meek says the fire was reported at approximately 2:07 a.m. on Friday in the 7700 block of Stony Point Road NW on private property, not at one of the nearby commercial buildings. He said it was likely started accidently by a short circuit or some other problem with a tractor.
When firefighters arrived, they found a smaller 60-by-40-foot barn and a larger 130-by-100-foot barn heavily involved in flames. They had the fire under control at 6:45 a.m. but remained on scene until after 11 for overhaul and to extinguish hotspots.
Tractors, equipment and horse stalls are among the items destroyed. Meek estimated the damages in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. He says the owners were able to get 21 horses out of the barn before the fire engulfed it.
