Scam Calls Impersonating Deputies Reported in Tuscarawas County
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 3, 2026) – The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an increase in scam calls from people posing as law-enforcement officers, sometimes using partial names of real deputies to seem legitimate.
Officials say the callers often claim the person missed jury duty or a court date and then pressure them to resolve an alleged arrest warrant immediately.
The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to stop, take a breath, hang up, and verify. Deputies will never demand payment over the phone or ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or financial information.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 330-339-2000, rather than using any number provided by the caller.
