Final call to apply for First Town Days queen and scholarship programs

| June 15, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) – A couple of deadlines are quickly approaching for contests that are part of this year’s First Town Days Festival to help with educational expenses.

Five $1,000 academic scholarships sponsored by the New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445 will be presented during opening ceremonies.  Scholarship Committee Chair Cheryl Graham says they are open to all recent high school graduates living in Tuscarawas County.

“We’re very excited this year to be able to do this and certainly thank the VFW for helping us to do that,” she said.

Graham says applications for the scholarships can be found at high school offices, www.firsttowndays.com, and at WJER Radio. They are due by mail or in-person on Monday, June 20th to her home at 203 S McKinley Ave in Dover, behind WJER radio. Her five-member committee will review and rate the applications and select the winners.

She says they are particularly interested in the applicant’s community service.

“What they’ve done to help their schools or what they’ve done to help our communities. Those are the things that we are looking for because that’s what First Town Days are all about,” said Graham.

In addition, applications for the queen’s program are available at the Tuscora Park office and must be returned there by 5 p.m. this Thursday, June 16th. The contest awards a scholarship of $1,750 to the Queen and a $1,250 scholarship to the attendant.
