NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 16, 2022) – The Tuscarawas County Commissioners are setting money aside to design the future home of the local elections board.

On Wednesday, they allocated $125,000 in COVID relief money toward the cause. Commissioner Kerry Metzger says they will use it to hire an architect to design a multi-purpose facility that will house the elections offices, a records storage area, and more.

“So that we have the funds to do what we need to do as far as the deed and the design because we can’t tell you at this point how large the building will be or the design.”

Al Landis says the goal is to have it ready in time for the 2024 presidential election.

“If we were to get lucky with the timeline and we could get in for the primary in 2024, that would be a bonus, but we’re just not sure of the timeline yet.”

The building will go up at 933 East High Avenue. The county is paying $345,000 for the property with American Rescue Plan money, which the commissioners will also use to fund the construction.
