Fugitive arrested after pursuit, break-in in New Phila

| July 22, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 22, 2022) – Police ended up picking up a violent fugitive with warrants in four different states after an early morning car chase.

It started just before 2 am when an officer attempted to stop an SUV that pulled out in front of his cruiser on Third Street Northeast. Instead, the vehicle sped off, leading the officer and a state trooper who was in the area at the time on a short pursuit down Fair Avenue and onto North Broadway. The driver – 36-year-old Daniel Duran of Canton – then reportedly parked the vehicle near a former bank, climbed a set of exterior stairs on one of the buildings there, broke a window, and entered the second floor.

At some point, Duran found an exit and left the building without being detected, fleeing to a home on Beaver Avenue where he was ultimately apprehended.

Detective Chaz Willet says Duran cut himself badly during the break-in and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital for treatment. After being released, he was transported to the Stark County Jail where he was booked in on a warrant for theft and burglary.

Duran was also wanted in Missouri for drug trafficking, in Arizona for a weapons violation, and in Oklahoma for armed robbery. Police found a loaded 9mm handgun on the floor of the vehicle was driving.
