Elections board to certify primary results, set ballot for November
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 15, 2022) – Tuscarawas County voting officials are closing out one election and getting ready for another.
The elections board is meeting this morning to certify the local results from the Aug. 2 primary, including any valid provisional and mail-in votes that didn’t make it into the initial count in the total. Director Gail Garbrandt says once that’s complete, members will then start setting the ballot for November.
“We have quite a few tax levies that are going to be on the ballot. Nobody filed as an independent candidate. And they will also certify liquor options for the November 8th General Election.”
The issues filed for November include renewals for the county health district and board of developmental disabilities, the Dover and New Philadelphia school systems, and Buckeye Career Center. Baltic, Wayne Township, and the Tri-County Ambulance District are trying to replace existing taxes. Tusky is seeking a 1.5-percent income tax increase, and Barnhill will be asking voters to pass a new 5-mill property tax. Garbrandt says those are in addition to the races that will be on the ballot.
“We have that U.S. Senate race at the top of the ticket. Then, we’ll have Congress, and then we’ll have the state house and then all of the statewide office holders… and we have two commissioners seats up.”
Garbrandt expects turnout to be much higher than it was for the primaries but not quite what we saw for the last presidential election. Registration ends on Oct. 11 with early voting beginning the next day at the county courthouse.
