Fire results in extensive damage to Smash restaurant, cause under investigation

| August 29, 2022

DOVER (WJER) (Aug 29, 2022) – Firefighters say an overnight blaze caused “heavy, heavy damage” inside the Smash restaurant on South Wooster Avenue.

Captain Mike Mossor says police on patrol discovered smoke coming from the building around 1:30 this morning.

He says firefighters arrived to find significant heat and smoke conditions.

“Took us a little while to figure out what was on fire and where it was burning,” he said.

He says it appears the fire had been burning for over an hour before it was discovered but eventually became oxygen-limited and choked itself out for the most part.

He does not have a dollar amount for the losses but believes it could be months before Smash reopens.

“I don’t want to say (it’s) a total loss, but the damages are extensive inside there and it’s going to take quite some time to get things taken care of,” Mosser said.

There were no injuries.

Mossor says investigators will try to determine how and where it started in the building.
