Standoff suspect in jail awaiting court arraignment

| September 12, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 12, 2022) – The Newcomerstown man charged with attempted murder for a five-hour standoff with sheriff’s deputies last month that ended with him being shot is set to make his first court appearance Tuesday for arraignment.

The August 3rd incident started as a mental health disturbance call at an Oxford Township residence.

Deputies eventually shot 36-year-old John Mozena III in the leg and shoulder after he reportedly started acting aggressively toward them with a gun outside the home.

A grand jury indicted Mozena in late August on the charges, which also include felonious assault and unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance, but he remained hospitalized for his injuries and was only just arrested and booked into the Tuscarawas County Jail last week.

Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Ernest is overseeing the case.
