DOVER (WJER) (March 13, 2024) – The planning commission has rejected ALDI’s request for a zoning change to allow a grocery store on the north side of the city.

The company had been planning to buy 2.4 acres on North Wooster Avenue from Dover First Christian Church.

Planning commission member and city service director Dave Douglas says he believes a grocery store is not a good fit for that spot between the church and an established neighborhood on Jessica Drive.

Douglas made the motion to deny the zoning change request from residential to business. The commission approved it unanimously.

Nearby Jessica and Northwood Drive residents have voiced their opposition at Council meetings and Tuesday’s planning commission meeting.

Dover Mayor Shane Gunnoe says he thinks ALDI officials still want to have a store in north Dover and he will work with them to find a new potential location.
