Area Red Cross chapters responding to Helene devastation
CANTON (WJER) (Oct. 2, 2024) – American Red Cross chapters across the region are jumping into action to assist communities hit hardest by Hurricane Helene in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Spokesman Jim McIntyre says the Red Cross today is deploying one of its emergency response vehicles from northern Ohio to distribute meals, water, and critical relief supplies for those areas in need that are currently accessible.
“The American Red Cross has launched a massive response to the catastrophic damage Hurricane Helene has done, spanning hundreds of miles and really uprooting lives and communities forever,” McIntyre said.
He says the Red Cross has sent a dozen volunteers down from northern Ohio, including a husband and wife from the local Heartland, Stark, and Muskingum Lakes Chapter in Canton who arrived in Asheville, North Carolina, on Sunday.
“They hit the ground running delivering emergency supplies to shelters. They haven’t stopped since,” McIntyre said.
McIntyre says the best way for everyone else to help is by donating at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. You can also text the word “Helene” to 90999 to donate.
