Bond hearing scheduled in Atwood Lake murder case

| September 15, 2025

Ruth Miller is led out of the courtroom of Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Ernest last week.

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Amish woman accused of murdering her son at Atwood Lake last month has been ordered to appear in court on Monday, Sept. 29.

On that date, Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Ernest will decide whether to establish bail for 40-year-old Ruth Miller, who is being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail. County Prosecutor Ryan Styer is asking for no bail and for Miller to have no contact with her surviving children.

Miller’s attorney Ian Friedman says he will seek a bond to have Miller released during the legal proceedings.

Miller last week pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a Grand Jury indictment charging her with murder and other six other counts in relation to the Aug. 23 drowning death of her 4-year-old son and her actions later that day when authorities says she drove a golf cart into Atwood Lake with her three teen-age children as passengers. They were not hurt.
