Both drivers injured when Impala crashes head-on into dump truck

| May 31, 2023

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (May 31, 2023) – The State Highway Patrol says a 29-year-old Newcomerstown man driving a Chevy Impala suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash with a dump truck this morning.

It happened in the 2800 block of Stonecreek Road Southwest between New Philadelphia and Stone Creek just before 8 a.m.

Sergeant Brian Hawkins says the Impala went left of center and hit the dump truck head-on. The Impala ended up in a ditch. The dump truck went off the road and struck a utility pole before coming to rest.

Hawkins says both vehicles appear to be totaled.

The Newcomerstown man had to be extracted from the Impala. He was flown by helicopter to an Akron hospital. Hawkins says he was conscious after the crash and his injuries appeared non-life-threatening.

The dump truck driver, a 63-year-old New Philadelphia man, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating what caused the Impala to go left of center.

Hawkins says Stonecreek Road was closed for about an hour and a half as crews cleared the scene.
