BREAKING: Newcomerstown Police investigating death of 15-year-old boy

| April 26, 2023

NEWCOMERSTOWN (WJER) (April 26, 2023) – Newcomerstown police have confirmed that the death of a 15-year-old boy is under investigation.

According to a press release from this morning, the Newcomerstown Police Department received a report of a deceased juvenile in the 500 block of South River Street Tuesday at 3:09 p.m. Responding officers found the 15-year-old dead inside the home. The press release also says that the Tuscarawas County Coroner and Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted at the scene.

Meanwhile, the Newcomerstown School District is having to grieve the loss of yet another student this academic year. The boy was a high school student at Newcomerstown. Superintendent Jason Peoples calls it tragic.

“Right now, we need to focus our attentions on support for our schools, our students and our community,” Peoples said. “We have multiple counseling agencies and support staff that are here on site at the high school, and they will remain here until further notice, based on the needs of our kids.”

This follows the house fire on Spaulding Avenue in late December that killed six people, including four children.

“Any loss of life in terms of students or community members is always difficult, but being so recent just adds to the difficulty,” said Peoples.

The cause of the boy’s death is pending an autopsy by the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office.

This is a developing story.  WJER will give updates as we learn more.
