Buckeye Career Center to host Volunteer Connect Fair

| October 11, 2023

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Oct. 11, 2023) – People wanting to give back to the community can find ideas at Buckeye Career Center this afternoon.  The school’s Joe Carlisle Café will be the site for a free Volunteer Connect Fair from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Volunteer Leaders in Action is coordinating this event.

Volunteer Leaders in Action Steering Committee Chair Kait Gallagher-Wilsterman says several area non-profits will be there to explain the kind of volunteers they are seeking.

“There’s pretty much something to fit anyone looking for a volunteer opportunity,” Gallagher-Wilsterman said.

Non-profits set to appear include Community Hospice, the Tuscarawas County Senior Center, the YMCA, and others that have come to depend on helpers.

“Some are completely volunteer run, like Little Theatre. Others have paid staff as well, but in order to continue serving the community and offer all their programming, they have to have volunteers,” she said.

Gallagher-Wilsterman says the time requirements for the volunteer positions can vary from organization to organization.

“Some have opportunities that are just an hour or two duration and are short-term commitments, so maybe something that’s only going to last a day or two, while others are looking for something long term,” she said.

She says it’s recommended for anyone with some free time to spare.

“We used to see a ton of retirees come to these events, and we always, always welcome those volunteers as well, but we’re starting to see more of a younger demographic as well.”

Gallagher-Wilsterman says attendees can register at the door. Those who complete the registration will then be entered into a drawing for a $100 gas card.
