Canton man killed in disabled vehicle struck along I-77 near Bolivar
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Dec. 30, 2022) – The State Highway Patrol says a 38-year-old Canton man was killed when his disabled vehicle was hit by a driver believed to have been impaired by drugs on I-77 south near the Bolivar exit.
No names were immediately released.
New Philadelphia Post Sgt. Clinton Armstrong says a car driven by a 53-year-old Canton man slammed into the back of the victim’s SUV in the berm at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday.
“There were indicators of drug impairment of the at-fault driver,” Armstrong said.
He says the SUV was apparently having battery or mechanical issues and the victim had been sitting in the passenger seat at the time of the crash.
“From our investigation, he had spoken with his wife and he was possibly waiting on a tow truck,” said Armstrong.
Armstrong says the driver of the car was taken to a Canton hospital for treatment.
A report will be sent to the prosecutor’s office for charges.
“We’re going to wait on some test results to come back and we will be taking our case to the grand jury,” he said.
The crash remains under investigation.
