NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Feb. 20, 2023) – Fire investigators are trying to figure out what started the Friday evening blaze that gutted a trailer in the Quaker Mobile Home park.

Crews responded to the home on lot 24 just before 7 pm after getting a call about the trailer on lot 24 catching on fire with the occupants possibly trapped inside. Captain Steven Wright says they were elsewhere when the blaze broke out, although firefighters did retrieve a cat.

“Members performed a primary search to make sure that no one was home and that there were no individuals inside. That’s when they located the cat, and Smith Ambulance provided the cat with oxygen until the Humane Society arrived.”

Investigators couldn’t immediately determine what caused the fire due to the extent of the damage to the trailer.

“The cause is under investigation with Captain Sholtz at the fire department here. It remains undetermined at this point… The trailer is a total loss.”

The Dover and Uhrichsville fire departments assisted, and New Philadelphia Police evacuated the neighboring homes. Several were within a few feet of the burning trailer, although firefighters managed to keep the flames from spreading. A humane society staff member told WJER News the occupants are unable to keep the cat, who’s a little scared but doing well and should be going up for adoption soon.
