NEW PHILADELPHIA – Charges had not been filed as of the end of the day Tuesday against an Amish woman accused of drowning her 4-year-old son at Atwood Lake over the weekend.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell had said he expects aggravated murder charges against the 40-year-old woman, who he says was experiencing a mental health crisis.

“She was clearly in mental crisis. No doubt about it. You talk to every witness or every first responder, she was in mental crisis, and it simply manifested itself into what we call a spiritual delusion,” Campbell said.

Campbell said he submitted the case to county prosecutor’s office Monday. We will continue to follow this story on WJER Radio.

The woman’s husband also drowned at Atwood Lake Saturday, but Campbell says his death was accidental. It is a tragic and complicated story. Film crew at courthouse not related to weekend tragedy

A film crew was recording scenes in and around the Tuscarawas County Courthouse Monday for the streaming series called “Amish Mysteries.” This had been arranged back in June.

Courthouse officials are making sure everyone understands that this has nothing to do with the tragedy involving the Amish family at Atwood Lake over the weekend. They sent out their heartfelt sympathy to all those involved.
