Churchgoers mark Lent’s arrival through Ash Wednesday traditions

| March 5, 2025

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Mar. 5, 2025) – Fat Tuesday has passed and now area churches are embarking on the Lenten season.

First Presbyterian Church Pastor Joe Svancara says they are partnering with three other churches on the east side of New Philadelphia for observances.

That starts with a drive-thru ashing service set to go on at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church parking lot – if the weather allows – from 11 a.m. to 1p.m., for those who can’t make evening services today.

Svancara says the placing of ashes on the forehead is symbolic for Christians by serving as a reminder that we’re all mortals.

The four New Philadelphia churches are also joining for a combined evening Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. tonight, again at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Svancara says the offering collection at tonight’s service will be donated to Friends of the Homeless of Tuscarawas County, where he is the board president.
