City Health Department now a scrap tire collection site
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 20, 2023) – You no longer have to venture outside Tuscarawas County to dispose of unwanted tires.
The City Health Department now accepts certain types of residentially generated tires by appointment, up to 10 per person per year. Environmental Health Director Zach Phillips says they can take tires from passenger, recreational, and home-use vehicles.
“They’re limited to truck tires, van tires, bicycle, motorcycle, lawn tractor. They cannot bring in semi-truck tires and large implement tires.”
The health department is offering the free service in partnership with the Stark-Tuscarawas County Recycling District. Phillips says they wanted to make tire disposal more convenient for local residents.
“We used to have a few places within the county that would take them. They’re places that actually are businesses that would take the tires. I think we have a few that don’t do it anymore but before the city having this you would either have to drop them off in Canton or you would have to go into Wayne County.”
He says it’s also an extension of the department’s mosquito control efforts.
“Tires are a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes so the less tires we have, hopefully the less mosquitoes.”
