Contractor Hits Gas Line in Sugarcreek; Leak Quickly Contained

| May 27, 2026

SUGARCREEK (WJER) (May 27, 2026) – Village firefighters say crews responded to a small gas leak at the east edge of town Tuesday after a contractor struck an unmarked private line along Beachy Road.

Assistant Chief Cody Shetler says the line served a single residence. He says firefighters were able to quickly isolate the leak by shutting off the gas at the meter.

Officials initially feared up to ten homes could be impacted, but the situation was contained to just that one house. No evacuations were necessary, although the road was temporarily closed as a precaution. The response lasted about an hour, starting just after noon.

Shetler says responsibility for the damage will likely be handled by insurance, with the contractor expected to cover repairs.
