Deputies Arrest Armed Man After Shots Fired Near Bolivar Dam
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Oct. 16, 2026) – Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s deputies safely ended a dangerous overnight incident in the Wilkshire Hills area early today, taking a Canton‑area man into custody after authorities say he fired gunshots near law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office says a Glenpark Road resident called 911 around 1:30 a.m. reporting a man knocking at his door, then walking toward the Bolivar Dam. Minutes later, dispatchers heard from a Canton woman who said she had just dropped off the father of her child at the nearby Speedway. She told authorities he’d been in crisis, might have a gun, was possibly under the influence of drugs, and may be suicidal.
Deputies searching the area soon heard gunfire and believe at least some of the shots were directed toward them. As an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper arrived to assist, another round passed close enough that officers could hear the bullet.
A drone team was also responding when the man eventually walked toward law enforcement and complied with orders to get on the ground. Deputies took the 46‑year‑old into custody without further incident and recovered a small semi‑automatic handgun. They say he appeared to be under the influence and told them he believed someone was chasing him — the same claim he made to the homeowner whose door he knocked on.
The man was checked by medics and taken into custody. The Sheriff’s Office says prosecutors will review possible charges, including attempted felonious assault, aggravated menacing, and using weapons while intoxicated. His name will be released once he is formally charged.
