Dover beats Northwest in girls soccer

| August 22, 2022

Final Score: Dover 2 – Northwest 0

Location: Dover (Crater Stadium)
Kickoff: 11:00 AM
Goals:

39:40 – Bridget McCrate

55:13 (PK) – Olivia VanDonge

It’s been an exciting first week of the 2022 soccer season for the Dover Girls soccer team. After getting off to a 2-0 start to the season, we wanted to ride that momentum as much as possible. Going into the game, we had a big void to fill with an injury to Alyssa Feller that kept her out of the game. The trio of Laura Grafe, Emilyn Feller, and Abby Jones filled in admirably and helped the Lady Tornadoes continue their winning streak.

In the first half, the team came out sharp which was important because Northwest has some talent. The first half was very tight where we held a slight advantage with possession and had a few more dangerous chances, but by no means was this a lopsided game. Just when we thought the half was going to end tied at zero to zero, Bridget McCrate took a pass from Lauren Grade right on top of the eighteen with less than 20 seconds left in the half and put it past Northwest goalkeeper.

In the second half, we continued to play very well and had some great play from the entire team. Our ability to possess the ball, stretch the field, and swing the play from one side to other seemed to be wearing Northwest down. This was the best performance by our midfield made up of Sophia Bielski, Carley Noretto, Meghan McCrate, Olivia VanDonge, and Annie Wright which received some great minutes from Elizabeth Lane, Bella Zobel, and Amaya Baumberger, as well. With their great play, about 15 minutes into the second half Olivia VanDonge played a through ball to Emilyn Feller who worked extremely hard to get in front of one of the defensive backs who took her down in the box earning a penalty kick (PK). Olivia VanDonge stepped up and confidently scored a much needed second goal.

As mentioned before, Northwest had some talent, but the defense continued to play very well and physically. Addie Martin stepped up in a few spots to make some great saves to help notch the defense’s third shutout of the season.

We have a few days off before we take on Marietta on Thursday at home kicking off with JV at 5:00 PM and Varsity to follow at 7:00 PM.

JV (Only 1 half):

Dover 4 – Northwest 0

Emilyn Feller – 8:15
Vanesa Aguirre – 17:52
Emilyn Feller – 30:37
Miley Patton- 35:56

On Saturday, August 20th, the Varsity players got their third season victory. Although the JV only played one half, the players gave it their all and like Varsity, came out on top. The 4-0 half was started by Emilyn Feller (# 10, Sophomore) who broke away from her defenders and placed a perfect shot in the lower left corner. The next goal was set up by Kenzie Wright (#3, Sophomore) who dribbled the ball to the center and passed it to Vanesa Aguirre (#14, Freshman) who battled the keeper to score the team’s second goal. The third goal, in the 30th minute, started with a perfect pass from Cashlyn Harmon (#11, Freshman) to Emilyn Feller, who scored her second goal of the game, team third. The final goal was a picture-perfect finish. In the last 15 seconds of the game, the ball went out of bounds, setting Kenzie Wright to take a corner kick from the right side of the field. The ball was perfectly placed for Miley Patton (#19, Freshman) to head it directly into the goal, with 4 seconds to spare.
