Dover considering ban on recreational marijuana sales

| May 7, 2024
Jodi Salvo and Kerry Metzger from Empower Tusc urge Dover officials to ban recreational marijuana sales in the city.

DOVER (WJER) (May 7, 2024) – The city might ban recreational marijuana sales just like New Philadelphia did last month.

Mayor Shane Gunnoe has asked Council members to consider a pair of ordinances that would “prohibit adult cannabis use operators” and “commercial cultivation, commercial processing and retail dispensaries” within city limits. Council will discuss it at a future committee meeting.

Gunnoe at Monday’s Council meeting introduced members of Empower Tusc, including coordinator and Republican state representative candidate Jodi Salvo, who spoke in favor of the ban.

“When you change your community norm, it allows availability and access to young people. The more marijuana or cannabis that is in our communities, the more accessible it is for young people.”

Empower Tusc Chairman Kerry Metzger said while the state approved legalizing recreational marijuana in November, the majority of Tuscarawas County and Dover residents voted against it.

Gunnoe says the city already banned medical marijuana sales back in 2016. He says the new legislation would not stop residents from growing marijuana for personal use.
