Dover honors Firefighter of the Year

| February 17, 2026

Dover Firefighter of the Year Austin Weaver shakes hands with Chief Russ Volkert at Monday night's City Council meeting.

DOVER – The city honored its first firefighter of the year Monday night. Fire Chief Russ Volkert announced the inaugural recipient as Austin Weaver.

Volkert says Weaver was nominated by his fellow firefighters, who called him an integral part of the department. They wrote that Weaver has taken the initiative in leading CPR classes, maintaining department software and more.

“One particular quote that I think says it all: ‘If there’s a need, all I have to do is ask, and Austin’s efforts are tireless,’” said Volkert. “It is for all of the reasons outlined above and especially for the work ethic and attitude he has consistently displayed in undertaking these added responsibilities, that Austin is hereby recognized as the Dover Fire Department’s 2026 Firefighter of the Year, the first of our members to be so honored.”

Weaver, a 2018 Garaway graduate, is also a captain with Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue.
