Dover Moves Toward Completing Towpath Trail
DOVER (WJER) (Sept. 8, 2026) – The Towpath Trail is closer to coming through Dover, but there are still several steps and at least a few years to go.
The Towpath Trail has been an ongoing project for nearly 40 years. The walking and biking path extends 93 miles south from Cleveland with about 7 miles remaining before it’s finished. Previous estimates had it done by now.
Dover recently received a $200,000 state grant for the design of the path through the city, but Mayor Shane Gunnoe says completion is still at least three years away.
Gunnoe says the timeline is dependent on the Ohio Department of Transportation’s schedule.
The state has budgeted $4.8 million in 2028 for Dover, New Philadelphia and Tuscarawas County to complete seven miles of the Towpath Trail, taking it to its final trail marker at Waterworks Park in New Philadelphia before 2030.
