Dover – New Philadelphia Special Response Team to get new armored vehicle

| November 3, 2025

City officials say an August swatting call on East Front Street in Dover exposed the need for a new armored vehicle.

TUSCARAWAS CO. (WJER) (Nov. 3, 2025) – Dover and New Philadelphia city leaders are moving forward with plans to buy an armored vehicle for their police forces.

The two cities have a combined special response team, called a SWAT team in other places. The cities’ safety directors agree that without an armored vehicle, that team is ill-equipped to handle the most dangerous calls.

Dover Safety Director Bob Everett says the vehicle could also be used in neighboring communities. The city councils recently approved a 50-50 split of the cost for the $382,000 Lenco Bearcat armored vehicle. New Philadelphia Safety Director Kevin Milligan expressed thanks to Dover officials.

The cities will take out a seven-year loan to pay for the vehicle, which will arrive in 2027.
