Dover School District buys East of Chicago building

A U-Haul truck was parked outside of the building and the signage has been removed at the former East of Chicago Pizza near Dover Middle School.

DOVER – The Dover City School District has bought the East of Chicago Pizza building near Dover Middle School. Superintendent Karie McCrate says they will eventually tear down that building and the former Pro-Print building next door to make way for the possible expansion of the middle school campus.

The Board of Education approved the $440,000 purchase last month. McCrate anticipates a Board decision on plans for the middle school campus expansion this winter. It could include building a new school to house preschool through eighth-grade or adding onto the existing building to accommodate more grade levels.

The funding for the project is still up the air. The county budget commission last month did not approve Dover’s plan to generate about $1.5 million a year by shifting inside millage and raising property taxes by 4.4 mills. That would have also made Dover eligible for $50 million in state funding.

The School Board is appealing that decision to the Ohio Board of Tax Appeals.
