Early morning fire leaves New Philadelphia home a ‘total loss’

| December 14, 2023

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Dec. 14, 2023) – Firefighters say a single-story home is a total loss following an overnight blaze.

Captain Bert Snyder says the cause is under investigation. He says a resident of the home in the 300 block of 2nd Dr. NW reported the fire just before 3 a.m. this morning.

“About a block away before we got here, you could see the glow of the fire into the night sky,” he said. “When we first arrived on scene there was heavy fire on the front porch and extending into the home.”

Snyder says two adults and two teenagers lived in the home. They all made it out safely and are staying at a hotel.

“Unfortunately, these folks… they don’t have shoes, they don’t have clothes, they really don’t have anything,” said Snyder.

He says damage is estimated at $90,000 to the home and another $20,000 to the contents. Two vehicles in the driveway were also damaged. Snyder says one cat did die in the fire and another is unaccounted for.

Dover and Uhrichsville firefighters responded along with Smith Ambulance.
