Civil War reenactment at Zoar
The event
Ohio’s largest Civil War reenactment comes to Historic Zoar Village on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a surrender ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Civil War reenactors will “invade” the village, portraying soldiers in a recreation of the Battle of Appomattox. This year commemorates the 23rd anniversary of the Zoar Civil War event and the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Appomattox.
The Battle of Appomattox was fought on April 9, 1865, and resulted in General Robert E. Lee surrendering to General Ulysses S. Grant and the Union troops. While this was not the end of the Civil War entirely, the battle played a key role in the eventual collapse of Confederate resistance.
During the event, guests can enjoy artillery night fire on Saturday night as well as a historical ball with food provided by the Anvil Tavern.
Special demonstrations and reenactors will also be located throughout the village, including:
- Camp Chase Display
- New York Herald Reporter
- Spring Hill Historic Site
- Civil War Songstress
- Abraham Lincoln
- Medical Tent
- National Museum of Civil War Medicine Traveling Exhibit
- Harriet Tubman
- 1st Sgt. Bertram Floyd of the 5th USCT Co. G
- Tickets are $12 for adults and free for children 12 and under, with all proceeds going toward the preservation and educational efforts of Historic Zoar Village. Admission includes entry to all museum buildings and reenactment activities. Parking is free. Both reenactor registration and pre-event ticket sales are available on www.historiczoarvillage.com.
