The event

The Wilderness Center (TWC) invites the community to look to the skies and explore the wonders of the universe during its upcoming Astronomy Day, March 21st. Events begin at 10:00am. Come enjoy a FREE full-day celebration of space science, discovery, and hands-on learning for all ages.

From the mysteries of distant exoplanets to life aboard the International Space Station, Astronomy Day offers an engaging lineup of expert speakers, immersive planetarium shows, and interactive activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire a deeper understanding of our place in the cosmos.

Guests can enjoy hands-on planet-themed activities, space science demonstrations, and a self-guided “Walk Through the Solar System” along TWC’s scenic Pond Trail. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to attend planetarium shows exploring topics such as the origins of moons, the search for new worlds, and the potential for life beyond Earth.

Featured speakers include Dr. Darren Williams of Penn State University, who will discuss the discovery of exoplanets and their potential to support life, and Tom Benson, retired Senior Research Engineer from NASA Glenn Research Center, who will offer a virtual tour and insights into daily life aboard the International Space Station. Also, David Gill, TWC Astronomy Club President, will explore how and what scientists look for in the search for life outside of Earth and learn more about what the future of this research looks like. Additional presentations will explore the ongoing search for life beyond Earth and the future of space exploration.

“Astronomy Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to connect with science in a meaningful and exciting way,” said Sarah Cline, Director of Education at TWC. “By combining hands-on experiences with expert insight, we hope to inspire curiosity and a greater appreciation for both our universe and our home planet.”

The event will conclude with an evening planetarium program highlighting the spring night sky, followed by a Star Watch in TWC’s observatory, weather permitting.

Planetarium seating is limited, and guests are encouraged to reserve tickets at the Gift Shop upon arrival.
