Fall Lantern Tours at Schoenbrunn Village
The event
NEW PHILADELPHIA – The annual Fall Lantern Tours at the Ohio History Connection’s Schoenbrunn Village are planned from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, at the site 1984 E. High Ave. in New Philadelphia.
Guests will experience Schoenbrunn Village by lantern, following a lighted luminaria path and discovering what life was like in the 18th-century Moravian community when the nation was on the cusp of the American Revolution.
The event will focus on life in the Ohio Country 250 years ago in celebration of America 250.
Apple cider and molasses cookies will be served while supplies last.
“Exploring Schoenbrunn Village by lantern light is a unique and enlightening experience,” said Tanner Immel, Site Superintendent for Schoenbrunn Village. “We hope families from all over the state will visit for these special tours.”
Schoenbrunn Village is the site of several Ohio firsts — settlement, church, schoolhouse and civil code. The village, restored to appear as it did more than two centuries ago, includes the original cemetery and 18 reconstructed log structures, as well as the church and gardens and a visitor center with a museum and gift shop.
Schoenbrunn Village was founded in 1772 as a Moravian mission among the Delaware Tribe of American Indians; it was the first Christian settlement in Ohio. Although the village prospered for several years, pressures from encroaching settlers and British-allied American Indians forced the abandonment of Schoenbrunn in 1777, shortly after the start of the Revolutionary War.
