The event

Families and nature enthusiasts are invited to experience one of summer’s most enchanting natural spectacles during Fireflies at The Wilderness Center on Saturday, June 26, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This family-friendly evening will celebrate the wonder of fireflies through guided hikes, hands-on activities, educational experiences, and opportunities to enjoy the beauty of nature after sunset. Guests can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the evening, including nature-themed crafts and games, a scavenger hunt, educational displays about dark skies and firefly conservation, a s’mores station around the fire circle, and delicious food available from Gringo’s Tacos & More. Visitors can also attend special presentations of Tonight’s Sky in The Wilderness Center’s planetarium. These 30-minute shows will help guests explore the night sky and gain a greater appreciation for the importance of preserving dark skies for both wildlife and people. As dusk settles across the preserve, participants will have the opportunity to join guided firefly hikes led by Wilderness Center staff. These hikes will take visitors along scenic trails where they can
observe fireflies in their natural habitat and learn more about their fascinating life cycle, behavior, and the conservation efforts needed to protect them. Fireflies play an important role in healthy ecosystems, but populations face challenges from habitat loss, pesticide use, and increasing light pollution. Throughout the evening, guests will learn simple actions they can take at home to create firefly-friendly landscapes and support dark sky conservation efforts. The event takes place at The Wilderness Center, located at 9877 Alabama Avenue SW in Wilmot. Advance registration is encouraged, though walk-in registrations will be accepted as space permits. For more information and to register, visit WildernessCenter.org or call (330)359-5235.
