Fatal Motorcycle Crash Under Investigation in Tuscarawas County

| August 31, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 31, 2026)  – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash from over the weekend in eastern Tuscarawas County that killed a Portage County man.

It happened around 12:30 p.m. Saturday on State Route 212 near Tabor Ridge Road in Warren Township.

New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Bryan Sponaugle say a Honda Civic car coming from the Atwood Lake area drifted into the opposite lane and struck an oncoming Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The motorcycle’s rider, 73-year-old James Goodmote Jr. of Rootstown, died at the scene.  He was not wearing a helmet.

The Honda driver, 32-year-old Corey Fisher of Dover, was seriously injured and taken to Aultman Hospital.  Sponaugle says Fisher was not wearing a seat belt, and a trooper who spoke to Fisher at the hospital apparently detected signs of impairment.

Sponaugle says no citations have been issued, yet.

Sponaugle said Fisher remained hospitalized today.  State Route 212 was closed for about three and a half hours following Saturday’s crash.
