Fatal overnight fire in New Philadelphia under investigation

| November 29, 2022

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Nov. 29, 2022) –  Fire Chief Jim Parrish says one person is dead following an early morning multi-tenant house fire downtown in the 200 block of Allen Lane Southwest.

“We do have a fatality but we’re not releasing a name or information right now,” said Parrish.

The fire was reported shortly after 3 a.m.  Parrish says there were four apartments inside the house and firefighters did rescue others from the building.

He says there is no ruling yet on the cause and origin of the blaze.

“The State Fire Marshal’s investigators are assisting our investigators with the investigation right now,” he said.

New Philadelphia police call logs indicate that there had been someone trapped on the roof early on and potentially tenants in the lower level who weren’t out yet when the fire was first reported.

The initial caller to police claimed there were people downstairs fighting all night who possibly started the fire.

Police have not yet returned messages from WJER.
