Fire breaks out at Sugarcreek Shavings facility; no injuries reported
STRASBURG (WJER) (March 10, 2026) – Strasburg firefighters say no one was hurt when a blaze broke out Monday afternoon at Sugarcreek Shavings on Hilltop Drive Northwest. Crews were called just before 4 p.m. to the facility, which manufactures and bags wood‑fuel pellets and livestock bedding.
Fire Chief Jason Ely says the fire appears to have started when a spark from operating equipment triggered an explosion in a dust‑collection system at the top of a silo. Flames then spread through the attic area and along the building’s back wall. Firefighters from several departments were on scene for about four hours. Ely said he wasn’t expecting any rekindles once crews cleared the site.
Ely describes the damage as “a fair amount,” but says there’s no estimate yet and it’s unclear how long operations may be affected.
This marks the second fire at Sugarcreek Shavings in about three years.
