Firefighters called to pumphouse fire at cheese factory

SUGARCREEK (WJER) (Feb. 17, 2025) – Sugarcreek’s fire chief says operations at the Guggisberg Cheese factory wouldn’t be impacted by a small fire in one of the buildings Sunday.
Chief John Meek says the fire happened around 8:50 a.m. in the pump house, which supplies water to the sprinkler systems in the main plant across the street in 1500 block of county Road 70.
He says employees had the fire out with a garden hose on their own, leaving mainly just smoke for the firefighters.
He says it appears the cause was electrical as the control panel on the main pump malfunctioned.
Meek says the pump would need replaced.
Baltic firefighters also responded Sunday.
