Forecasted rain could force Light Up Sugarcreek organizers to cancel

SUGARCREEK (WJER) (Dec. 1, 2022) – The village’s marketing administrator is encouraging everyone planning to attend Saturday’s holiday celebration and lighting ceremony on the square to keep an eye on Facebook for updates.

Christine Quickel says there’s a chance they’ll have to cancel the Light Up Sugarcreek event that’s scheduled to take place from 4 to 7 pm.

“It’s all weather-dependent, and it looks like it may rain right now on Saturday, so check out our Facebook page just to make sure that everything’s going on the way it’s supposed to in case the weather’s bad.”

If the event does go forward, attendees will enjoy free refreshments and sleigh rides around downtown, where merchants will be staying open late and offering special discounts, before gathering in front of the cuckoo clock to light up the town for the season.

“We’ll have a candle-lighter who will start us off by lighting the candles in the crowd of people who are there for the event and then everybody sings ‘Silent Night’ and we have the countdown and turn on the lights.”

Quickel says some of the businesses around town intend to get in on the fun if Mother Nature doesn’t dampen the festivities. Heartland Gifts will be roasting chestnuts and firing up a snow machine, The Gospel Shop will be serving up wassel, and Sweetwater Farms will have a live nativity. There is no makeup date, so for now, everyone is keeping their fingers crossed.
